A strong and impassioned case for a “more realistic” view of cannabis smoking was made by Dr Nicolas Malleson, director of Student Health Service of the University of London, yesterday. Dr Malleson, who is a member of the Home Office advisory committee on drug dependency, said cannabis was not a dangerous drug, and it was high time that people looked more seriously at the reasons behind the young who failed or became alienated from society and less at cannabis, which presented a “very very minor problem.”

Speaking at the International Congress of the World Federation of Mental Health, at Holland Park School in London, he recalled the terrifying things people once said about masturbation and coffee.

Pediatric Food Allergies on the Increase

When I was a kid, I don’t remember anyone I knew having a food allergy. Maybe it was just that I was a kid and not paying attention, but studies are showing that childhood allergies are on the rise.

In the 10 years between 1997 and 2007, food allergies were up approximately 18 percent. In 2007 alone, 3 million children reportedly suffered from a food or digestive allergy to such items as nuts, wheat, eggs, or milk.

Dr. Susan Rudders and her research team studied emergency room visits due to allergic reactions at Children’s Hospital Boston from 2001 until 2006. The study, which involved 1,255 children, showed that visits had more than doubled and had worsened – many more children were experiencing anaphylaxis.

Health Tip: Let a Stress Fracture Heal

A stress fracture is an overuse injury that usually occurs from exercise, such as running.

Fatigued muscles after a while aren’t able to absorb the stress of a certain activity, so the bone begins to absorb the impact, resulting in a tiny fracture.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests how to help a stress fracture heal:

  • Take a break from the exercise or activity that triggered the stress fracture.

Study: U.S. Girls Entering Puberty Earlier

Girls in the U.S. are hitting puberty at younger ages, according to new research.

At age 7, about 10 percent of white girls and 23 percent of black girls had started developing breasts, compared to 5 percent of white girls and 15 percent of black girls in 1997, according to a study led by Dr. Frank Biro of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The results were published Monday in the medical journal Pediatrics.

Biro’s team examined about 1,200 girls aged 7 and 8 in Cincinnati, New York and San Francisco. Full Post…
