Mark students on weight – diet guru

France’s top diet guru Pierre Dukan is urging the government to grade students on their weight in a bid to curb growing obesity.

In a book to be published on Thursday, Dukan suggests that students in their last two years of high school be awarded extra marks if they manage to maintain an acceptable Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

“Obesity is a real public health problem that is rarely – if at all – taken into account by politicians,” Dukan told newspaper Le Parisien ahead of the book’s launch.

Dukan said his education plan would be “a good way to sensitise teenagers to the need for a balanced diet.”

He denied it would punish overweight children, saying: “There is nothing wrong with educating children about nutrition.

France recommends removal of risky breast implants

Dr. Maurice Mimoun, a plastic surgeon at the St Louis hospital, holds silicone gel breast implants made by French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, that he removed from a patient because of concerns that they are unsafe, Paris, Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011. French health authorities are considering whether to suggest that an estimated 30,000 women in France get their breast implants removed, amid warnings by leading doctors about risks of rupture and possible cancer risks.

1 In 3 Women Suffer Partner Violence

More than one in three women have experienced sexual assault, physical violence or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey.

The same is true for more than one in four men, according to the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey. The survey, released Wednesday, was based on telephone interviews with more than 16,500 adults in 2010.

Supported by the National Institute of Justice and the Department of Defense, the survey was aimed at better describing and monitoring “the magnitude of sexual violence, stalking and intimate partner violence victimization in the United States,” the CDC said. Full Post…
